Teh Hotness - Thoughts on Episodic Gaming Content

April 27th, 2006 · No Comments

It’s the talk of the gaming town - episodic, episodic, episodic. Everybody is throwing their hat in the ring. So I thought I would dig up some articles and commentary for everyone to enjoy.

Gamasutra did this article on Episodic Gaming.

Game Designer, Brandon Van Slyke, made his case

Game Daily talks with a few industry folks for their opinion.

MIT gaming guru David Edery comments on Gamasutra’s article and weighs in with his own opinion.

My stance is pretty simple (and similar to Edery’s) - people want to experience episodic content, but they don’t want to pay-per-episode. Your initial uptake might be very high, but with each subsequent episode you will very likely lose viewers. One bad episode might sink the ship.

Diminishing returns will sink the episodic boat before it sails based on current thinking.

The most obvious way out of this is a subscription model, with people paying x amount for x content. The other option is giving it away for free and generating revenue with in-game advertising.

Gaming is becoming more like television every year… the really funny part is that TV is becoming more like a video game at the same time.
