Things like this remind me that I need to go to Japan.
Only in Japan can you get an olive drab cell phone - pimped out in WWII styles and a classic radio interface on the desktop. I’m sure that someone with spray paint, a S60 Theme toolkit and some wicked Symbian skills could make a phone just like this (new project for my N70?), but it says a lot for the state of the Japanese market when the nations largest carrier can release a phone like this.
In Japan you can get panties from vending machines, softcore porn is on TV, there are anime fetish bars and restaurants. Contrary to popular belief, in Japan, these are fringe activities, serving a small part of the population. You would expect something like the WWII phone to come out from a fringe company which focuses on otaku (translation: Japanese geeks), but it’s coming out from DoCoMo.
Is Japan going through a WWII retro boom like the video game industry has been through over the past 5 years?

this is so rad! have you seen one in-hand? i’m curious about the face. they’re clearly not real knobs and dials as is evident in the profile view, but does that mean the whole dial themed face is an image on a screen? very cool.

Sounds like the Japanese will be looking for a mobile version of Medal of Honor soon :> New WW2 trend there, amazing!
